Research into corporate finance in Spain is plentiful in both quality and quantity, as proved by its publication in the best international journals. Further stimulus for progress in this area is provided by the Jaime Fernandez de Araoz Award, which is calling for papers for its third edition – a particularly significant edition given the current financial and economic climate, comments Luis de Giundos, president of the Award Jury and former State Secretary for Economic Affairs. This edition is being sponsored by CUNEF (University College of Financial Studies) and Universia, two prestigious organisations that are benchmarks of academic and university excellence.

The leading representatives of the Spanish financial world met yesterday at the second Edition of the “Jaime Fernández de Araoz Corporate Finance” Award (the only one of its kind in Spain). His Royal Highness Prince Philip presented the Award to María Guadalupe and Vicente Cuñat (professors of finance at Columbia Business School and Pompeu Fabra University, respectively) for their paper “Globalisation and the provision of incentives within the company: the effect of international competition”.

The II Edition of the “Jaime Fernández de Araoz Corporate Finance” Award – the only one of its kind in Spain – has recognised the growing relevance of the link between executive salaries and increasing international competition. This is how the Jury saw it by giving the Award to the paper “Globalisation and the provision of incentives within the company: the effect of international competition”, by María Guadalupe and Vicente Cuñat, professors of finance at Columbia Business School and Pompeu Fabra University, respectively. His Royal Highness Prince Philip will present them with the Award, 10,000 euros and a sculpture by Martín Chirino, on 29 May.

Some pending problems in Corporate Finance (and II)

The Enron, WorldCom, Parmalat and similar scandals over the last decade have led governments to put legislation in place to protect investors. The adoption of corporate governance reforms has been on a voluntary basis in some countries and compulsory in others. The bloodiest example is the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, legislative reform in the United States which all companies wishing to be listed on the stock market must adhere to. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act has made it so expensive to become stock market listed that only one European company has started the process since the Act was introduced.

Specifically, this area of finance studies what the optimum combination of financing sources is that minimises a company’s capital costs; what these financial instruments are; lastly, what the factors are that determine the cost of one or the other.
